Thanksgiving is here. For many of us, this holiday may not bring
the joy and excitement that many people seem to experience at this time
of year. When I am going through a particularly hard time, it is easy for me
to get lost in the pain and frustration that sometimes comes in a relationship where
your partner suffers from a mental illness. At times like this, it sometimes helps me
to think of the things that I can be thankful for, to take my focus off my
own problems.
Are there things in your life
that you can be thankful for right now? It may help to use your journal and write down some
of the things you are grateful for. Some people spend a little time each day
recording their grateful thoughts. I am often surprised at how the smallest things can
give me a sense of peace -- a soft pillow, a warm bed, the
sound of rain on the awning. I have come to appreciate that even the most
insignificant joys are so very precious.
